How Exactly Tattoos Improve Our Self-Esteem

“My new tattoo is so good looking, it truly feels like wearing a piece of armor. It truly fits so well with my body. I feel so much more comfortable and confident looking like this” says Renee Bosman

Tattoos can be compared to a reliable partner, old friend or even lover. In their presence, we always calm down and feel confident and comfortable, even if the honeymoon ended ten years ago. As soon as you see a friend, the brain sends signals to change the hormonal balance, and you feel good. The same goes for tattoos.

Tattoos keep us in a confident and energetic state because it’s our emotional anchors which trigger us in right direction. The more I have, the more confident I feel. When glancing at your tattoos, your brain reads that trigger, and fills your body with endorphins… the happy hormones you were full of at the time of getting that anchor.

And I mean not just the moment of application, but a longer time period: starting from the moment you decided to get a tattoo until you fully got used to it and stopped noticing it. Try to recall that potent blend of anticipation, excitement, triumph, and the feeling of your own coolness. The more vivid these impressions were, the deeper the emotional anchor will be.

While you were experiencing these emotions and reflecting on them, your brain was building a neural connection through which electrical impulses from the brain reach the organs of the body responsible for producing the necessary hormones. The longer we stayed in this state, the stronger the neural connection became.

Think of it as development of the road. At first it’s always a barely visible and narrow trail, but in the end it becomes a wide interstate. Just imagine that. The wider the road, the faster the impulses run through it, and the faster the impulse runs, the quicker the desired effect occurs. No magic, no bullshit, just plain neurochemistry and physics.

In simple words: You experience stuff, you give it attention, you react, get emotional, your brain remembers the reaction, and keeps all data about hormone mix that brought you into that state for the future, to not waste precious time on thinking how to react.

Imagine your brain as a bartender who always knows which cocktail to pour into the glass of your body. By glancing at your ink, you’re placing your usual order in that bar.

If you feel down, take some time to give a good look to your tattoos. You’ll be surprised how quickly your spirits will lift up.

And one more thing:

When you ink yourself up, your body goes mental with pain, right? But here’s the kicker, it starts shooting up this crazy chemical called endorphins, and it’s like an euphoria bomb in your system. Cheers, biology!

It’s the same wicked buzz you get when you stuff yourself silly at a buffet, hit the gym, or getting freaky in bed with a partner. Ever heard of opioids? Endorphins mess with your brain just like those painkillers, and trust me, they’re proper addictive.

But here’s the thing. Unlike pumping yourself full of chemicals, when you get inked, your own brain releases endorphins naturally. No extra crap needed, you get me?

Now, they don’t officially call the urge to feel amazing through tattoos or piercings an addiction… but it sure as hell feels like one, innit?

Keep that in mind and have a nice day!
